| Thanks to all who
responded to our 2007 NADP-NTN Site Supply Inventory questionnaire.
With 260 sites in the network, it's a challenge to keep everyone
adequately stocked with the clean supplies. If you have not done so
already, please take the time to let us know what supplies you have.
Based on responses received to date, there are almost 2000 buckets
and lids circulating among our sites. We have noted a mismatch
in the number of clean buckets, lids, bottles, and boxes at certain
sites. You may receive a follow-up note in the near future regarding
these discrepancies. Thanks also to all who
changed their collector lid seals and returned the old seals to the
CAL. We grade each seal returned to us based on the impression
made by the bucket rim in the foam. Please contact us if your are
concerned that your lid is not sealing tightly to the rim of both
the wet and dry side buckets. Example photos from this year's
returned lids are shown on the next page. The illustrate an "ideal"
lid seal, and lid seals with issues. Remember: A good, clean
collector lid seal leads to clean, quality samples! |

| 2006 Annual Summary and Maps:
Enclosed is a copy of the 2006 Annual Summary
produced by the NADP Program Office. This publication is available
electronically at http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/lib/data/2006as.pdf. Additional
maps (concentrations/deposition of magnesium, potassium, sodium, and
chloride) are available at http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/isopleths/maps2006/.
Animated sequences of sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium concentration and
deposition changes since 1985 are available at http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/amaps2/. |
| New Buckets:
The CAL is evaluating new buckets that do not require spacers
for proper positioning in the collector. We have tested these buckets at our
IL11 site. You will start receiving these buckets in the next few months.
Please contact us if you have any problems with these buckets in your
collector such as lid seal alignment, clutch slippage, and unusual cycling. |

Reminder: You should periodically observe the position of the
precipitation (bottom) pen on the Belfort recording raingage. When the pen
position is too low (less than ½”), wind and other events can jar the
Belfort raingage causing the precipitation pen to become “stuck” below the
chart drum. We suggest that the precipitation pen baseline be set between
the ½” and 1” mark. If you need information on adjusting the baseline of
your raingage, please consult Appendix D of your NTN Site Operations
Manual. The zero adjustment screw is shown on Page D-7. Please call
1-800-952-7353 if you have any questions or concerns. |

Preparing for Winter:
September is the time to think about winterizing your site. Enclosed is a
memo with directions to winterize your raingage and service the collector
backup power supply (if any) at your site. (If you have an electronic
recording raingage, please follow the manufacturer’s instructions for
winterization, or call the CAL.) Please fill out and return the blue
winterizing questionnaire to the CAL by December 15th. For samples removed
after winterization, check “Yes” in Block 4.4 of the FORF. |
|
Reminder: Missing Precipitation Types.
Does it snow in Florida in
July? Typically not, but we cannot
assume the type of precipitation at your site. Please remember to completely
fill in the precipitation type in Block 7 of the FORF: R if only rain
occurred, S if only snow occurred, and M for any combinations,
including sleet and freezing rain. Record hail as R and document its
occurrence in Block 10. Circle U (unknown) for those instances when
you do not know the precipitation type.
