How to Find Us

7/08

Congratulations and Happy 30th Birthday from the NADP to our first seven sites established in July 1978: Marcell Experimental Forest (MN16), Coweeta (NC25), Mead (NE15), Hubbard Brook (NH02), Kane Experimental Forest (PA29), Horton’s Station (VA13), and Parsons (WV18).
Reminder! You should have changed your lid seal on Tuesday, July 1. After installation, remember to clean the lid seal with laboratory wipes and deionized water. If you have not received a new lid seal, please let us know ASAP, and we’ll send you one.    Give us a call at 800-952-7353 if you have any questions.
In order to save shipping costs, the 6-pack shipping protocol will be phased in for all NTN sites this fall. Many sites are already sending and receiving large supply boxes with 6 sets of supplies (buckets, lids, and sample bottles). The new sample mailing boxes are pre-addressed and do not need mailing labels. Please let us know if you would prefer to continue to receive the 4-in-1 supply boxes that contain only 4 sets of supplies.  Call us at 800-952-7353 if you have any questions.

Supplies & Parts Return: Do you have any extra supplies, parts or equipment at your site?  Help keep them in circulation by returning them to the CAL in your next used supply shipment. Examples include:

  • Unmatched 1-L sample bottles, lids, sample shipment boxes, bucket, or other unused supplies

  •  For sites with electronic gages: Unneeded Belfort raingage charts

  • Collector parts (motorboxes, sensors, etc.) and raingage parts (clocks, towers, etc.) that are in need of repair or unused
Have you noticed the new sample shipping boxes? The new 6 in 1 protocol requires flattened shipping boxes. The boxes are pre-printed with the CAL’s shipping address, so shipping labels aren’t required. The 1-L sample bottles will come individually bagged and not shipped inside boxes. Check your supply of packing tape and, when needed, request it on your field form. You will need it to assemble the sample shipping boxes.

Check it Out—Electronic Raingage Data Online: Do you have an electronic raingage? You can view your data at http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/precip/. This is a “beta” web site (in other words, a work in progress) being developed by our expert NADP database manager, Bob Larson. We’ll describe the online tools available for electronic raingage data interpretation and other useful features in a future monthly memo, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, call Matt if you have questions about how to use the current web site.

Preparing for Winter— September is the time to think about winterizing your site. Enclosed is a memo with directions to winterize your raingage and service the collector backup power supply at your site. If you have an electronic recording raingage, please follow the manufacturer’s instructions for winterization, or call the CAL. Please fill out and return the blue winterizing questionnaire to the CAL by December 15th. For samples removed after winterizing, check “Yes” in Block 4.4 of the FORF.

Speaking of Raingage Maintenance – Fall is a good time to perform annual maintenance on your Belfort raingage before winter weather sets in. Appendix D of the NTN Site Operations Manual entitled "Recording Raingage Troubleshooting Guide" is a valuable resource. The manual is available online at http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/cal/PDF/AppendixD_FINAL.pdf.

Sites with Electronic Gages – If at all possible, please upload your electronic data within one day of shipping your sample. The CAL retrieves precipitation data when samples are logged into our database and field form data are entered. If the precipitation data are missing at data entry, equipment operation cannot be verified. If you are having problems retrieving or uploading your electronic raingage data, please call 1-800-952-7353, or email ntn@sws.uiuc.edu. Thanks for helping us review your data promptly! Your CAL Data Review Team.
