Urbana Middle School's "Water Works" program
teamed hand-picked students and teachers with scientists and other community
resources. Nine "citizen scientists" from the school tested soft drinks, cleaning fluids, water and other liquids for acidity, charted the results and tried to match their numbers with numbers on an "unknown substances" chart. The students also learned about the history of pH analysis by viewing water-testing tools and equipment for testing for acid rain.
